Drug Class And Mechanism: Enalapril is a drug that is used for treating high blood pressure. It is in a class of drugs called angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. ACE is an enzyme in the body that causes the formation of angiotensin II. Angiotensin II causes the arteries in the body to narrow, thereby elevating blood pressure. ACE inhibitors, such as enalapril maleate, lower blood pressure by preventing the formation of angiotensin II thereby relaxing the arteries. ACE inhibitors also improve the effectiveness of the heart in patients with heart failure by reducing the blood pressure that the heart must maintain. Enalapril was approved by the FDA in December, 1985.

Prescribed For: Enalapril is used alone or in combination with other drugs to treat high blood pressure or congestive heart failure. After a heart attack, enalapril has been found to be effective in improving function of the damaged heart and in reducing symptoms and hospitalizations related to heart failure.

Dosing Information
Medication should never be administered without first consulting your veterinarian.
The typical dose administered to dogs is 0.25 mg per pound (0.5 mg/kg) once or twice a day orally.
For cats, the typical dose is 0.12 to 0.25 mg per pound (0.25 to 0.5 mg/kg) once or twice a day orally.
Frequently enalapril is given with other drugs, especially in pets undergoing treatment for heart failure or severe high blood pressure. In these situations, a lower initial dose may be prescribed to allow the pet time to get used to the new medication.

The duration of administration depends on the condition being treated, response to the medication and the development of any adverse effects. Be certain to complete the prescription unless specifically directed by your veterinarian. Even if your pet feels better, the entire treatment plan should be completed to prevent relapse.

How to Take Enalapril
Take this medicine exactly as directed by your doctor.
Keep your regular appointments with your doctor. You will probably need to have regular blood pressure checks to ensure the dose you are taking is right for you.
Do not stop taking this medicine without speaking to your doctor first.
Try to take this medicine at the same time each day to avoid missing any doses.

What If I Miss A Dose?
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses. If you take only one dose a day and forget to take it that day, do not take a double dose the next day.

Keep out of the reach of children in a container that small children cannot open.
Store at room temperature below 30 degrees C (86 degrees F). Protect from moisture. Keep container tightly closed. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.
